2012 Art Dolls
For a long time, I have been playing with the idea of making art dolls, but I wanted them to be right so I waited. Finally, at the beginning of this year, it was time. I love painting, and I always will, but I wanted to work in the third dimension. My art dolls are an extension of my paintings, a deeper exploration of self-love, inner beauty, balance, and peace.
Each doll is approximately 6" tall. I hand-stitch their bodies from re-claimed fabric, and stuff them with fabric scraps to give them some lively weight. I then paint them with acrylic paint, and sculpt their arms, heads, and hearts from paper clay. When the clay dries, I carve and sand it further as needed before applying paint. Finally, I add hair. Sometimes it is my own. Other times it is doll hair and/or feathers. Each doll has her own look and personality, but they all are introspective.

Finally,
her hair is made from feathers, or a lock of my hair, or reclaimed doll hair. For a custom doll, if you wish she could have a lock of your very own. She
becomes a part of you, a piece of yourself that you can always see as
beautiful even when you don't start out the day feeling that way. If you
feel awkward or strange about that, or you don't have enough hair to
give, how about feathers? Or mohair? Or even synthetic hair. The
details can all be worked out. This is all about you.
